CSQ funding continues in 2026-27, with increased investment in Queensland construction training and updated course funding. For students working in construction, the starting point is the training they need: what skills will it develop, how does it build on existing knowledge, and what will it cost?

Construction Skills Queensland has announced a record $83.5 million investment for 2026-27, which is $23.5 million more than the previous funding year.

CSQ funding remains intended for eligible workers who are genuinely and substantially involved in Queensland building or civil construction.

Before choosing a course, consider how the learning builds on your existing skills and what contribution you or your employer may need to pay. Contact On The Job Training to find out whether you may be eligible for CSQ funding.

Check CSQ Funding Information.

What is CSQ Funding?

Construction Skills Queensland (CSQ) funding is an industry-funded subsidy that contributes towards the cost of approved training for eligible workers in Queensland’s building and construction industry. It can reduce the amount a participant or employer needs to pay, but funding is not automatic or a guarantee that training will be free.

What Has Changed With CSQ Funding In 2026-27?

In the new CSQ short course program period (1 Oct 2026 – 30 Sept 2027), the core CSQ eligibility principles remain broadly unchanged, with updated funding and some new initiatives for 2026-27.

The major updates for 2026-27 include:

  • CSQ’s total investment has increased to $83.5 million.
  • Course funding and participant contributions have been updated for the new funding year.
  • A new Qualification Upgrade Program has been introduced.
  • Industry micro-credentials are continuing to develop.

For current course information, see OTJT’s course schedule. Confirm your CSQ-funded student contribution with On The Job Training before training begins.

Who May Be Eligible for CSQ Short Course funding?

CSQ Short Course funding is intended for eligible workers who are genuinely and substantially involved in Queensland building or civil construction. Working for a construction company does not automatically make someone eligible.

On The Job Training must assess your individual eligibility before funding can be confirmed.

What about visa holders?

Visa holders need to:

  • Have the right to work in Australia
  • Hold a visa prescribed by CSQ
  • Have worked as an Eligible Worker in the Queensland Building and Construction Industry for at least six months.

OTJT will need to check the participant’s circumstances and supporting evidence before training starts.

Are apprentices and trainees eligible?

Apprentices and trainees who meet the Eligible Worker requirements may access Short Course funding where the course is not required as part of their apprenticeship or traineeship training plan.

They are not eligible for Skills Assessment and Gap Training, Higher Qualifications or the new Qualification Upgrade Program.

Who May Not Be Eligible for CSQ Funding?

CSQ funding is specifically intended for eligible workers in Queensland’s Building and Construction Industry. People whose main employment is in another industry, or whose role is primarily maintenance, manufacturing, transport or other non-construction activity, may not be eligible.

Many of the same licences and skills are used across a range of industries, but that does not automatically make those workers eligible for CSQ funding. The subsidy is supported by an industry levy and is intended to help address skills and training needs within Queensland’s building and construction sector.

If you are unsure whether your role is eligible, On The Job Training can assess your circumstances against the current CSQ requirements.

What Do Costs, Funding Limits and Evidence Mean For You?

CSQ funding is a subsidy towards eligible training, not an automatic entitlement to free training. Depending on the course, you or your employer may need to pay a contribution.

Use OTJT’s approved 2026-27 Course Schedule and Price List to check the current CSQ-funded student cost, and confirm the amount that applies to your circumstances before training begins. Check OTJT’s current 2026-27 Course Schedule and Price List for current CSQ-funded student costs.

What will I pay for CSQ-funded training?

CSQ contributes towards approved training for eligible participants. Depending on the course, there may still be an amount for you or your employer to pay. Some courses currently have a $0 CSQ-funded student cost.

The tables below show the CSQ contribution and the CSQ-funded student cost listed in OTJT’s current 2026-27 Course Schedule and Price List.

CSQ funding is subject to individual eligibility, available OTJT funding allocation, CSQ program requirements and course requirements. OTJT must assess eligibility before funded training can be confirmed. For the latest amount applying to your course, check OTJT’s current Course Schedule and Price List or contact the team before booking.

Can my employer pay my CSQ student contribution?

Where a participant contribution applies, it may be paid by the participant or their employer. Confirm the current contribution and payment requirements with On The Job Training when booking.

How many CSQ-funded Short Courses can you do?

Eligible participants can access funding for up to eight Short Courses during the 2026-27 program year, across Building and Civil combined, subject to course-category limits and available CSQ funding.

Course-category limits also apply:

  • Maximum 3 High Risk Work units
  • Maximum 3 Mobile Plant Operator units.

Can I receive CSQ funding for a course I have already completed?

Generally, no. CSQ will not subsidise training in a unit that you have already completed, including an equivalent superseded unit.

An exception may apply where CSQ has specifically approved a course for refresher funding. Examples can include traffic control, low-voltage rescue and HSR refresher training. OTJT does not currently schedule these refresher courses.

Does my CSQ funding allocation reset each year?

CSQ funding limits apply to each program year. Training funded in a previous program year does not normally count towards your new annual Short Course allocation.

What counts towards the High Risk Work limit?

High Risk Work courses include licence training in dogging, rigging, scaffolding, crane operation, hoists, and boom-type elevating work platforms, all of which require a High Risk Work Licence.

Eligible participants can access funding for a maximum of three High Risk Work units during the 2026-27 program year, subject to final CSQ program requirements.

There are exceptions listed in CSQ’s for licenses related to asbestos removal to access outside the maximum 3 allowed during the contract funding period.

What counts towards the Mobile Plant Operator limit?

Mobile Plant Operator courses include civil plant training, such as excavators, skid-steer loaders, rollers, loaders, and articulated haul trucks.

Eligible participants can access funding for a maximum of three Mobile Plant Operator units during the 2026-27 program year, subject to final CSQ program requirements.

What evidence will you need?

Funding is not automatic. Applicants will need to provide current supporting evidence so On The Job Training can assess eligibility before funded training commences.

Examples of supporting evidence can include a letter from your employer or a statutory declaration, depending on your circumstances. OTJT provides an employer template letter to help businesses supply the required information.

Plan your next training step

Start with the skills your work requires, then check which training addresses the gaps. Review the course content, your existing training and the contribution that may apply before making a decision.

To find out whether you may be eligible for CSQ funding, contact On The Job Training and submit the required supporting evidence for assessment before funded training begins.

Read our CSQ funding information for an overview.

Funding remains subject to individual eligibility, course requirements, available CSQ funding and OTJT’s current contractual arrangements.
