Slewing Mobile Crane Licences – C2, C6, C1, C0

Want to operate a crane in Australia? You’ll need a high-risk work licence first.

Under WHS legislation, you must be licensed to operate a slewing mobile crane. That means completing formal training and passing a national assessment for the specific class of crane you want to operate.

We offer training and assessment for all slewing crane licence classes:

These tickets cover machines like mobile slewing cranes, crawler cranes, all-terrain cranes, rough-terrain cranes, pin-jib cranes and more.

Choosing the right slewing mobile crane course

At OTJT, we’ve got multiple slewing mobile crane courses on scope, from the C2 (up to 20 t), C6 (up to 60 t)C1 (up to 100 t) right through to the C0 (0ver 100 tonnes).

Where to start:

While we can deliver and assess all classes, we strongly recommend new operators start with the C6 – (TLILIC0023 – Licence to operate a slewing mobile crane (up to 60 t)).

It’s the best entry point for anyone beginning a crane career, as the relevant units for the C2 and C6 licence classes share similar content, but the C6 gives you broader lifting capacity and better operator options.  We run C6 courses weekly, with night sessions every four weeks for those needing flexibility.

Next level operators:

For students aiming higher, such as the C1 licence (up to 100 t), then we suggest gaining some experience on smaller cranes first, then progressing straight to the CO open class licence (TLILIC0020 – Licence to operate a slewing mobile crane (over 100 tonnes)), which allows you to operate any mobile crane (slewing or non-slewing).

Although we can assess the C1 unit (TLILIC0021), we don’t currently have a compliant crane on site. In special cases, we can organise an assessment on your employer’s compliant crane by arrangement.

What are the licence pathways?

To enrol in any slewing mobile crane course, you must hold a Licence to Perform Dogging (DG). This is part of our company policy and reflects real-world industry expectations for lifting communication, safety and teamwork.

Here’s how it works from there:

  • C6 & C2 – No prior slewing crane licence required

  • C0 & C1 – You must already hold a crane licence or equivalent certification recognised in Australia (company policy)

FAQ'S

Yes, our policy requires a current Dogging Licence (DG) before any crane operating course with us.  There’s no relationship more important in a lifting crew than a crane operator and their dogger.  They must communicate effectively during lifts, work together on lifting plans and have each other’s backs.

It is no longer a legal requirement, but in our view, one of knowledge, skill and above all, safety.

Five days of training & assessment (plus optional online e-learning). Night classes run 5 evenings + potentially 1 Sat morning.

If you’re a FIFO or shift worker, then we can tailor a training and assessment plan to fit around you through our flexible delivery options.

Give us a call on (07) 3807 6061 and we can develop a plan together.

Yes! Night courses run every four weeks, Mon-Fri 3:30 pm–9:30 pm and a Saturday morning when needed to allow enough time to complete the NAI assessments.

We provide access to our bespoke virtual reality simulator to practice load control, trainer-led coaching, podcasts, study checks, video tutorials & quizzes.

We can also make reasonable adjustments in training delivery and assessment, provided that it doesn’t unfairly disadvantage other students, or go against the rules of assessment conditions for the training product and national assessment instruments.

Those who struggle with LLN & Digital literacy – you are not alone! If you know you struggle in areas of learning, reading, writing, oral communication, numeracy or digital literacy, be sure to let us know and tell us about any strategies you know that help you.

In our experience, the most effective way to combat any learning difficulty while training with us is to be proactive. From the moment our students are enrolled, they will have access to all course materials and learning support resources.

So don’t wait for day 1 – get ahead of the game, minimise stress during the courses and maximise your time doing the fun stuff!

We have weekly intakes.  Call us and we’ll do everything we can to accommodate last-minute requests.
